Service Day at the Nashville Rescue Mission

Posted on June 19, 2012

This past month a group from Thomas Nelson was able to go tour and serve at the Nashville Rescue Mission. This was an incredible opportunity for the Thomas Nelson team to learn more about the work of this great organization. The team was graciously given a tour of the facility, which provides dormitories, a kitchen, chapel, classrooms, and much more for the people that come to find help. Kristen Baird, Marketing Coordinator, for Thomas Nelson remarked that “the volume of people the Mission works with was what she found most surprising. They had rooms with over 200 bunk beds in them for anyone who needs a bed. The magnitude of their impact in Nashville blew me away. They serve thousands of meals each week and provide a safe place for those who need a bed to stay.”

The Nashville Rescue Mission provided the team a healthy lunch (they are focusing on adding more produce-oriented, locally-grown menu choices to their menu for the people who come through their doors) before they moved down to the mission’s downstairs storage facility. The Mission receives literally tons of donations per year, but these donations are always in need of proper shelving and organization. The Thomas Nelson team either went through piles of clothes to sort and fold into organized containers, or worked within their stock room to ensure that goods like toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc. were put away properly.

Throughout the day, the members of the Mission were able to share stories of the men and women who have been blessed to go through Nashville Rescue Mission’s rehabilitating programs. The Mission strives to not only address their resident’s current needs, such as a warm meal and safe place to sleep, but also wants to supplement basic physical needs with a resident’s spirituality. Nashville Rescue Mission strives to have Christ be the center of their organization, and a philosophy of forgiveness and love is crucial to the recovery of these men and women’s lives. In fact, many of the men and women who work at the Mission now have been past residents of the Mission’s programs, and the personal testimonies that they shared with the Thomas Nelson team were truly inspiring.

“It was just such a sweet reminder of how God works in everyone's lives in different ways, and can even rescue those who think they are too far gone to get help.” Kristen Baird

“What was most apparent was that the Mission does an amazing job of addressing their resident’s basic needs the best they can, but it is evident that it is Christ that transforms and brightens the men and women who pass through Nashville Rescue Mission’s doors.” Jolene Barto, Communications Coordinator for Thomas Nelson.
